Rebuilding a 3.2

What should have been a winther-project, became a late summer-project instead.

Two broken cylinderbolts at no 2 made the decision pretty simple, the engine and tranny had to be taken out for a further inspection.

At least it was discovered at the workshop and not while driving...

Besides the broken bolts and dirt, it shows pretty good condition.

The rest of the oil where drained, before the first step of cleaning of the block could begin.

At some point the entire car where treatet with wax-protection, including the engine, so a cleaning with a gasoline product help to loosen dirt, oil etc. before a more firmly ultrasonic cleaning.

At this stage the entire engine is taken appart, besides the two broken bolts, there where discovered a minor shreaded bearing at the oilpumpshaft and at the bottom of the piston refering to cylinder no 2, there where no other issues.... so far?

Some of the small parts, that are going on the intake system are getting ready for yellow zink plating.

The engine tin and airbaffles are beadblasted and powder coated.

Despite of cylinderbolts from a 993, there are still 2 broken bolts? ( you can see one of them, upper right corner)

24 new ones are going in.

Crankshaft, ploils and pistons are going to be counterweigthed and balanced.

New valve guides and seats, new bearings and piston rings and seal-kit.

The intake are taken apart, and every small items are ready for gold zink threatment.

Good news.... The cylinder 2 wasn´t damaged during the broken bolts, but I decided that all six are honed, anyway.

Everything should be ready to be put together sometimes soon, can´t wait.

The bits and pieces are back and look amazing, now it´s time to reasembly the intake.

The engineblock, cylinders, pistons, crank and heads are back from the machine-shop.

They have done the following things:

- Engineblock are ultra-sonic cleaned and checked for internal cracks.

- Cylinders are meassured and honed.

- Pistons checked and got new piston-rings.

- Crank are meassured, balanced and ultra-sonic cleaned.

- Heads are cleaned, polished, new valves, guides, seats, springs etc. etc.

9er Teknik who do the engine rebuilt does a amazing job, Enrico Reck ( the owner ) takes his time, when he do such a job.

Everything is meassured and checked twice, before going back.

I´ve decided that every piece that have a chance to be worn, should be changed, and so it does.

Everything did goes as planned, and finally the engine where ready to be put back in the car..

I allways fancy the look of a complete clean engine, especaly a Porsche air cooled, because of its raw look, a kind of a Terminator?

Now it has to be cracked in, drivin it with low rpm and only short burst to around 3-4000 rpm.

I celebrated this engine rebuild with a new set of wheels.

Jonathan from Group4Wheels got me theese, can´t wait to put them on....
